Swartz Creek made history this season with their first ever Flint Metro League soccer championship. The Dragons went undefeated at 7-0 in dual action and amazingly did not allow a single goal scored against in conference play in 2017. Fenton High School has captured their 24th Metro Golf Title in the 2017 season under the direction of Coach Kurt Herbstreit who was named the Metro Coach of the Year. The Tigers finished the dual season with a 6-1 record and won both the Pre-Season and Championship Metro Tournaments.
Brandon’s Brett Hobson was the tournament medalist with a round of 80 at Fenton Farms. West was the Regional champion in the 100 M, 400 M, 4x200 Relay and runner-up in the 200 for a very impressive day.

![]() 'Fenton High School started its boys' golf season by winning the Pre-Season Flint Metro League Jamboree by 27 strokes over the rest of the field. The league's overall golf standings are determined by combining the pre-season tournament results with dual match records and the final league tournament results. In addition, the two league tournaments are used to determine the all-league team. Fenton's Patrick Conroy and Tait Shaltz each shot a 80 over the 18-hole Fenton Farms course to share medalist honors. Fenton’s Dylan Conte, Holly’s Luke Harrington and Brandon’s Brett Hobson rounded out the top five by carding 82’s. Dual matches for the Metro League will begin next week and the final Metro tournament will be held on May 22 back at Fenton Farms. PRE-SEASON TOURNEY RESULTS Logan Carter, an all-state softball player from Fenton High School, and Jack Shore, an all-state baseball player from Linden High School, have been named the Flint Metro League's Athletes of the Month for April.
Logan Carter has excelled for four years in softball for the Tigers, earning All-Metro honors in each of her first three years. As a freshman and sophomore, this outstanding catcher was named to honorable mention teams and earned unanimous First Team All League and First Team All-State teams. Logan holds MHSAA individual records for RBI’s in a single game (twice), home runs in consecutive at bats (twice) and home runs in a season with 11. Carrying a 3.809 grade point average, Logan has accepted a softball scholarship at Western Michigan University and will pursue a degree in exercise science and plans to become a physician's assistant. Jack Shore, also named the Flint Area April Male Athlete of the Month, has the distinction of the title of 2016 Flint Journal Baseball player of the year. Jack had a break-out junior year earning First Team All-Metro and First Team All-State honors as a pitcher and led the Eagles to a D2 Runner-Up title in post-season action. In addition to pitching, Jack also has a strong bat and plays at short for the Metro League champs. Also excelling in the classroom with a 3.66 GPA, Jack will attend Michigan State University in the fall, majoring in marketing in pursuit of a MBA. Continuing one of the longest-running sportsmanship initiatives in the state, Flint Metro League winter varsity coaches have selected the teams that showed the best sportsmanship in league competition this season. Since 1998, every varsity coach has named the league opponent they believe showed the best sportsmanship when they competed.
Special recognition for this past winter season goes to Brandon High School for leading all league teams with nine winter teams selecting the Blackhawks for showing the best sportsmanship. Kassidy is a member of the MHSAA District Championship and FML Championship competitive cheer team from Kearsley. In addition to her outstanding classroom GPA of 4.038, Kassidy excelled during her senior season with selections to 1st team All-Metro, 1st team All-Region and 2nd Team All-State teams. Kassidy helped the Hornets to a Metro Championship, District Championship and a 7th place finish at the D2 State Meet. Next fall, Kassidy plans to continue her education in preparation to become an optometrist. Jack Olson carries a 3.56 grade point average and is a 4 year varsity wrestler for Brandon HS. He was a Metro and District Champion and a State qualifier at #112. Jack has been a member of 4 straight District Team Championships for the Blackhawks. To cap off his career, Captain Olson placed 8th at the Individual MHSAA D2 State Finals and was also named as Academic All-State. Following graduation, Jack will attend Western Michigan University to continue his education. Three bowling teams from the Flint Metro League, two boys' teams and one girls' team, finished in the top three at MHSAA regional competition to qualify for the MHSAA state finals on March 3.
The defending state champion girls' team from Kearsley won the Division 2 regional by 644 pins. The Hornets were led by freshman Imari Blond who was the Regional Individual champion in a narrow 6 pin margin over Kearsley teammate and runner up Alexis Roof. Also qualifying from Kearsley were Barbara Hawes, Emma Boychuk and Karlee Griffin. Other individual Metro qualifiers were Jenna Royal from Holly, Jessica Andrus from Brandon and Iyana Blanks-Prater from Flushing. The Flushing Raiders (D1) and Kearsley Hornets (D2) each brought home Regional Championship trophies in the boys division and will advance to the state final team competition. Kearsley's Bryce McKerchie was an individual Regional Champion in convincing fashion with a 260 pin advantage over his nearest opponent. He will be joined in individual competition by teammates Jake Reid and Aaron Linn, Jeremiah Turner and Levi Beadlescomb from Brandon, Brenden Burger from Clio, Logan Rigdon and Max Musphy from Swartz Creek and Chase Fleming and Chase Fleming and Nick Warren from Flushing. 24 individual wrestlers from all eight Flint Metro League schools will compete at the MHSAA Individual wrestling finals March 2-4 at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Among the top-four finishers at regional competition, the league had three regional champions. Dalton Ballentine from Clio was the Regional Champion at 215. Fenton's Ben Cushman (215) and Kearsley's Dylan Terrance (160) were also Regional champions and have completed an undefeated season heading into the State Finals.

Linden was the only team to advance to the Regional final of the four Metro teams that qualified for Regionals.
The Eagles defeated Orchard Lake St. Mary's in convincing fashion 60-17 to advance to the finals vs. Marysville. Linden lost 15-59 to the Eaglettes in the championship match. Brandon also squared off against OLSM in the semis and ended their season in a 16-50 loss. Clio lost a very tight match to St. John's 30-39 in the Regional semis. Flushing lost to Davison. Flushing, Clio, Linden and Brandon won wrestling team districts and will now advance to regional competition. All matches will be held on Wednesday February 15. The winners will advance to the quarterfinal round, which will be held at Central Michigan University on February 24th.
Flushing, a D1 District champion will wrestle against Davison at Midland Dow at 6pm. D2 Linden and Brandon will travel to Goodrich. Linden will face Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and Ortonville will wrestle Marysville at 6pm. D2 Clio will travel to Petoskey to wrestle against St. John’s. Every Flint Metro League school has at least one wrestler moving on to the MHSAA individual regional round, the final step before qualifying for the state individual wrestling finals held on March 2-4 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Linden and Swartz Creek each qualified 6 wrestlers for regionals, Brandon had 5, Fenton had 4 and Flushing had 3. The Kearsley Hornets continued their dominance in bowling with both the boys and girls teams capturing league championships this past weekend.
The girls team had another undefeated season at 14-0 and increased their Metro Conference winning streak to 88 straight matches and their 8th consecutive league championship. Bowling began in 2009 as a league sport with Oxford winning the first year and Kearsley winning every championship since. The Hornets look to continue their state dominance, setting their goals on a fourth straight Class B State Championship as they enter the post season. The Kearsley boys also rolled their way to an undefeated Metro season finishing with a perfect 14-0 record. The boys team shared in at least a portion of the league title five times in the 9 year history of Metro bowling. The Hornet’s boys team won two Class B State Championships in the past three years and finished in second place last season. It is not an overstatement to say that the Kearsley Hornets are the teams to beat, both in the league and the State. The Flint Metro League is very proud of their accomplishments. Paige Reid, a two-sport athlete from Holly, and Zach Elizondo, Flint Metro League wrestling champion from Kearsley, have been named the Flint Metro League's Athletes of the Month for February.
Paige has lettered in tennis and basketball for the Bronchos while maintaining a 3.85 cumulative GPA. She is in her fourth year on the Holly varsity basketball team, having won second team all-league honors as a sophomore and as a junior. Paige has also earned first team all honors in her freshman, sophomore and junior years on the Broncho tennis team and was a two time Regional Champ at 1 Doubles. Paige has committed to continue her basketball career at Trine University where she will pursue a pre-PA degree. Zach has lettered in soccer and wrestling for the Hornets while keeping a 3.578 GPA. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year for Kearsley soccer while serving as team captain this past fall. On Saturday, Zach was the FML wrestling league champion at #119 and led his team to repeat league and District championships. Zach has earned a spot on a FML all league team in each of the past three seasons and was a state qualifier in his junior year.
