Varsity athletes who achieved Scholar-Athlete status for the recently completed winter sports season have been named by Flint Metro League schools. Varsity letter winners in 10th, 11th and 12th grades who played an official league sport and have maintained a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average achieve Flint Metro League Scholar-Athlete awards. Award winners for each school are linked below; in addition, each sport's all-league team list has been updated to show which all-league athletes also achieved Scholar-Athlete status. The girls' team from Kearsley won the Division 2 regional once again in convincing fashion and will head to the state finals in pursuit of another state title. Five Hornet bowlers qualified for the individual portion of the tournament led by Sara Ritchie in 1st place, Allison Robbins in 2nd, Emilea Sturk in 3rd, Alison Eible in 6th and Megan Timm in 8th. Also qualifying from the Metro League were Tori Vanderfuur from Swartz Creek in 2nd, Cassandra Most from Linden in 4th and Rebekah Muzyk from Goodrich in 6th. The Swartz Creek Dragon (D1) and Kearsley Hornets (D2) each finished in 2nd place in Regionals in the boys division and will advance to the state final team competition. In singles competition, the Metro League had 7 boys qualify for the state finals: in D1, Nick Johnson in 7th and Griffin Henderson in 9th; and in D2 Howard Hammond 2nd, Gavin Haack in 6th, Nicholas Ruggles in 9th from Kearsley; Reese Martindale in 4th from Clio; and Justin Mallory from Holly. In D3, Corunna’s Brady Cornell finished in 2nd. The Division 1 State Finals for this year will be held at Thunderbowl Bowl Lanes in Allen Park; D2 at Century Bowl in Waterford and Jax 60 in Jackson for D3 on March 26-27. 54 individual wrestlers from Flint Metro League schools will compete at the MHSAA Individual wrestling Regionals March 27. Among the top-four finishers at District competition, the league had 15 champions.

All matches will be held on Wednesday February 24. The winners will advance to the quarterfinal round, which will be held at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo on March 30th.
Flushing, a D1 District champion will wrestle against Midland at 5:00pm on Wednesday March 24th at Davison HS. D2 Goodrich will wrestle Croswell-Lexington and Lake Fenton and Owosso will go head to head at Lake Fenton HS at 5:00pm on Wednesday March 24. Kearsley captured a MHSAA District Title to lead a group of four Metro League teams on to Regional competition for a state title.
In Division 2, the Hornets scored 748.58 points to win the title over 2nd place Fenton who had 746.08 points. Linden finished in 4th place with 716.92 points to also advance. These three teams will compete in Regional competition at Walled Lake Western on Tuesday March 23 at 5:00pm. In Division 3, Lake Fenton scored 716.84 points to finish in 4th place and will advance to Regionals held at Novi on Tuesday March 23 at 5:30pm. The state final competition for Division 2 will be held on Friday March 27 and Division 3 on Saturday March 26 at the Breslin Center at Michigan State. The Fenton Tigers have captured their 10th straight Metro League Championship finishing the league season with an undefeated 6-0 dual season record and a 1st place finish at the Metro League meet with 508 points. The Tigers, led by Coach of the Year Brad Jones, finished 127 points over 2nd place Swartz Creek.
The league meet was exciting with 5 new records established. Fenton's Max Haney was a part of 2 record setting relays and set 2 individual records in the 200 Medley Relay and the 500 Freestyle. Jack Fries from Fenton set a new record in the 100 Backstroke and was a member of 2 record setting relays. Fenton set a new record in the 200 Free Relay with a team of Jack Fries, Kaz Sieja, Max Haney and Gavin Crews with a time of 1:29.43. The Fenton 400 Freestyle Relay team of Max Haney, Kaz Sieja, Jack Fries and Gavin Crews set a new record with a time of 3:16.96. Fenton’s team score of 335 ties a Metro League record set also by the Tigers in 2018 at Fenton Farms. As returning champions, Goodrich entered the tournament with an undefeated 9-0 dual record. Fenton posted a 8-1 dual record losing only to Goodrich by a single stroke.
Victoria Carnell of Fenton was the tournament medalist posting an 81 at Springfield Oaks. Closely behind to round out the top 5 individuals were Brook Herbstreit of Fenton with 82, Amanda Miller from Goodrich and Olivia Herbert of Fenton with 84, and Olivia Rushton of Goodrich with 86. Congratulations to Fenton’s Kurt Herbstreit who was named by the league coaches as the Flint Metro League Coach of the Year. This marks the 6th time Coach Herbstreit has won this award in girls golf along with twice for boys golf since the league initiated the award in 2016. Brandon HS received three sportsmanship votes by opponents, Linden received two votes, and Clio, Fenton, Flushing, Goodrich and Kearsley each received one vote. All teams will now enter MHSAA Regional competition beginning on October 5th. Kearsley, Flushing and Swartz Creek will compete in D2 competition at the Pohlcat in Mt. Pleasant on Oct 7; Holly will also be in D2 at Farmington Hills GC on Oct 8; Fenton and Linden will be in D2 competition at the Emerald in St. Johns Oct Oct7. Clio, Corunna and Owosso are in D3 at the Flint Golf Club on Oct 5th ; Brandon and Goodrich will compete at Heather Hills in D3 on Oct 6th. Best of luck to all our Metro teams! FLINT METRO LEAGUE TOURNAMENT RESULTS FLINT METRO ALL-LEAGUE GOLF TEAM The Flushing Raiders have earned the most points in the winter season with 30 to lead the Stripes Division of the Flint Metro League, topping 2nd place Kearsley by 2.5 points. Winning a title in girls' basketball and boys’ bowling and placing 2nd in girls' bowling and boys basketball, the Raiders had a strong winter season.
After the conclusion of the fall and winter seasons, Fenton continues to lead the league with 65 points, 6.5 points ahead of second place Flushing. Fenton has won the last 4 all-sports championships and 16 of the last 17 races. In the Stars Division, Corunna tallied 28 points for the winter season to finish 2.5 points ahead of Clio and 2 points ahead of Goodrich. The Mustangs won the Stars championship in both wrestling and competitive cheer and finished second in boys’ basketball. Goodrich continues to lead the Stars with 64.5 points, a commanding 16 point lead over second place Clio. For each varsity sport, a school receives one point for each team it finishes ahead of in the final standings, with the league champion receiving a bonus point. With the anticipated addition of boys lacrosse this year as a Metro League sport, there are eight spring sports yet to compete in the 2019-20 league sports year. We can expect a lot of movement in the all-sports competition between now and June. was The Flint Metro League announces Katelyn Siebert from Lake Fenton and Colton Blaha from Owosso as the Stars Division Athletes of the Month.
Katelyn is a 4 year varsity basketball letter winner and three time captain for the Blue Devils. She earned Honorable Mention honors in the GEC as a freshman and sophomore and was First Team as a junior. Katelyn recently scored her 1,000 point and led her team to the District final game to be played Friday night. She has twice been named the State Bank Athlete of the Week. Katelyn has maintained a 3.81 GPA and will continue her basketball and academic career at Cornerstone University in the fall. Colton Blaha is a two sport standout for Owosso, lettering in both football and wrestling, and has also lettered in basketball and track. With over 50 career wins, he has twice been crowned the league champion in the Metro. A three time state qualifier, Colton earned All State honors as both a freshman and junior. This season, he was the League, District and Regional champion at #160 and will challenge for a state title this weekend. Colton was also named as First Team linebacker for the Trojans and holds the school record for solo tackles on the gridiron. Maintaining a 3.26 GPA, Colton will continue his wrestling career at the collegiate level where he aspires to be an All American wrestler. 25 individual wrestlers from Flint Metro League schools will compete at the MHSAA Individual wrestling finals March 6-7 at Ford Field. Among the top-four finishers at regional competition, the league, and Holly HS, had two regional champions. Jacob Gonzales from Holly was the Regional Champion at 135, and Cade Dallwitz was the Regional Champion at 189.

The Hornets scored 755.30 points to win the title in convincing fashion by over 14 points over the runner-up. Fenton finished in 2nd place with 725.28 and Clio was very closely behind with 725.16 for 4th to also advance. These three teams will compete at Fenton HS on Saturday February 29th at 10:00 am. Cianna Gloster from Swartz Creek HS and Nate Young from Holly have been announced as the Flint Metro League Athletes of the Month in February for the Stripes Division.
Cianna is a three sport athlete for the Dragons lettering in basketball, volleyball and track. A four year member of the varsity basketball team, Cianna has scored over 1,000 points and is the current school record holder for rebounds. She has earned All League honors in each of the last three seasons and was named unanimous First Team as a junior. Also a standout in track and field, Cianna currently holds the school record in the 300M hurdles. The senior holds a 3.249 GPA and plans to study social work and continue her basketball career at one of the many collegiate schools involved in the recruiting process. Cianna was also selected as the Flint Kiwanis Athlete of the Month and is now in the running for the Athlete of the Year. A two-time All Stater from Holly, Nate Young has been a standout wrestler for the Bronchos for four years. Last year, Nate was the runner-up at the State meet at #130 and is currently ranked 3rd in the state at his weight division of #140. Nate has also been on the 1st Team All League team as a champion in the last two seasons. Recently, Nate was crowned both the District and Regional champion at #140. Nate maintains a 3.47 GPA and will attend Northern Illinois on both an academic and athletic scholarship and will wrestle for the Huskies. Every Flint Metro League school has at least one wrestler moving on to the MHSAA Individual Regional round, the final step before qualifying for the state individual wrestling finals held on March 6-7 at Ford Field in Detroit.

The Flint Metro league announces Fenton's Julia Young and Joel Diccion as the female and male Athletes of the Month for January for the Stripes Division.
Julia Young is a two sport athlete lettering in both ski and soccer for the Tigers and serving as captain for both teams. In ski, Julia was named to the All Region team as a junior and was a state qualifier in both the slalom and giant slalom. Julia also plays soccer for Fenton and contributed to the team's league title last season. Also excelling in the classroom with a 4.038 GPA, Julia has received numerous academic scholarships and will attend Findlay University majoring in Pre-Vet/Animal Science in her goal to become a veterinarian. Joel Diccion has been a four year member of the Tiger swim team leading Fenton to numerous titles. He earned first team honors in the 100 backstroke and 200 medley relay as a sophomore and junior, as well as the 400 free relay as a sophomore. Joel also was a state qualifier in the 200 m. relay and 100 back as both a sophomore and junior, along with the 100 fly and 400 free as a sophomore and 200 IM as a junior. He is the current school record holder in the 100 backstroke. Joel has maintained a 3.915 GPA and plans to continue his swim career in college while studying astronomical engineering. The Flint Metro league announces Madison Voelker and Caden Veenhuis from Goodrich HS as the female and male Athletes of the Month for January for the Stars Division.
Madison Voelker is a standout basketball player and earned First Team All-State honors as both a sophomore and a junior. She was a GAC unanimous First Teamer in 9th, 10th and 11th grade and two-time Flint Area Player of the Year. Madison holds the school record for points in a game at 44 and has cleared the 1,000 point barrier as a junior. She has lead the Martians to two league and 3 district championships. Named a BCAM Academic All-Stater last season with a 4.06 GPA, Madison will continue her basketball career at Northwood University on a full ride scholarship where she will major in healthcare management. Madison was also selected as the Kiwanis Athlete of the Month. Caden Veenhuis is a two sport athlete for Goodrich lettering in both basketball and golf. A two year member and current captain for the Martian basketball team, Caden has helped the team to a District championship last season and the team currently leads the Stars division with a 7-0 record. In the spring, Caden earned honorable mention status in two seasons as a varsity golfer. Also excelling in the classroom, Caden has maintained a 3.8 GPA. The Flint Metro league announces Owosso's Katie Clevenger and Lake Fenton's Brenden Schroeder as the female and male Athletes of the Month for December.
Katie Clevenger is a two-time All State diver for Owosso in both her junior and senior seasons. Katie also earned All Metro honors, All County and All Regional honors as a diver in both her junior and senior years. Katie was also a member of the state qualifying medley relay team. She was named to the Lansing Dream Team as a senior. Katie also excels in track where she qualified for the state meet last year in the 4x100 relay. A scholar-athlete with a 3.92 GPA, Katie plans to pursue her diving and academic career at Oakland University where she will major in Marketing. Brenden Schroeder is a two sport athlete for the Blue Devils lettering in cross country and track. A two time state qualifier, Brenden led Lake Fenton to a Regional Championship as a junior. As a senior, Brenden was selected as the team captain and earned a spot on the 2nd All Metro team. He also earned All County, All Regional honors and was selected as a State Bank Athlete of the Week. Sidelined by injury much of his junior track season, Brenden plans to run again this spring. The 3.09 scholar-athlete is currently undecided between the Air Force or continuing his cross country and track career at the collegiate level. Fenton's Lillie Kromer and Linden's Tyler Buchanan have been selected by the AD's of the Flint Metro League as Athletes of the Month of December for the Stripes Division.
Lillie a two time All Stater has been a four year standout swimmer for the Tigers. She has played a key role in helping Fenton to four consecutive Metro League Championships during her HS tenure. A school record holder in both the 200 Medley and 400 Free relays, Lillie has earned 1st Team All Metro honors in each event for the past three seasons. She also earned 1st Team Metro individually in the 100 free and 50 free for the past two seasons. Lillie has been a state qualifier 9 times and a MITCA qualifier 12 times since her sophomore year. In the classroom, Lillie has maintained a 3.65 GPA. She will attend Cedarville University in the fall majoring in Environmental Science with minors in Missions and Bible. Tyler has been a multiple All-Stater in both cross country and track for Linden. In cross country, Tyler has been All-State for three straight seasons and finished 6th overall in this year's MHSAA State Finals. He was also the individual Metro Champion and Regional Champion for the past three seasons. As a junior, Tyler was named the Tri-County Male Athlete of the Year and was recently announced as this year's Tri-County CC runner of the year. On the track, Tyler has been a versatile champion earning All State honors in the 3200M as a freshman and sophomore, 3200M relay as a sophomore and the 1600M as a junior. He has been a two time 1st team All Metro champion in both the 3200 and 1600 as well as a Regional champion in the 3200M, 3200 relay, 1600M and 800M. A 3.0 GPA student, Tyler will continue his cross-country and academic career at Wayne State University where he will major in Computer Science. The Flint Metro League is proud to announce that both Lillie and Tyler have also been selected as the Flint Kiwanis Female and Male Athletes of the Year. Both of these exceptional scholar-athletes will now be in the running for the Greater Flint Kiwanis Athlete of the Year. |
